Advanced Academics

Advanced Placement (AP) exams, administered by the College Board, offer Belton ISD students in Advanced Placement courses a powerful opportunity to demonstrate mastery of rigorous, college-level coursework. These exams, typically taken in May, assess students’ knowledge in subjects ranging from STEM to humanities, with each exam aligning with the challenging curriculum of the AP classes. 

By earning a qualifying score (typically 3 or higher on a 5-point scale), students can earn college credit or advanced placement at many colleges and universities, potentially saving time and tuition costs. 

Participating in AP exams enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic discipline, giving students a competitive edge in college admissions and scholarship opportunities. Within Belton ISD’s Career Readiness framework, AP exams empower students to foster intellectual curiosity, prepare for postsecondary success, and build a strong foundation for future academic and career achievements.

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a digital standardized test that measures knowledge and skills needed for college and career readiness, serving as a practice test for the SAT AND as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. It includes Reading and Writing and Math sections and uses multistage adaptive testing – an approach that selects question sets from different pools passed on the student’s ability, providing a more precise and individualized assessment as compared to a fixed-difficulty exam.

Belton ISD gives the PSAT and the PSAT/NMSQT during the school day each year, typically in October.

The SAT is a digital, standardized test developed by the College Board, widely used by U.S. colleges and universities to assess a student's readiness for college during the admissions process.

Since 2024, the SAT is fully digital and computer-adaptive. The test includes:

• Reading and Writing Section: Two modules testing literacy, comprehension, and writing skills, including grammar, usage, and style.
• Math Section: Two modules evaluating numeracy and problem-solving skills. A Desmos calculator is available throughout the Math section.

The second module's difficulty in each section adjusts based on performance in the first, making a strong start essential for a higher score.

The SAT evaluates skills critical for college success, including:

• Literacy: understanding and analyzing text
• Numeracy: Solving and analyzing mathematical problems
• Writing Skills: Mastery of grammar, usage, and style

Total SAT scores range between 400 – 1600. Section scores are 200 – 800 for Reading and Writing and 200 – 800 for Math. Scores are typically available within a few weeks after the test date. 

Belton ISD gives the SAT during the school day each year, typically in March. 

Preparing for the SAT at home:

• Official Digital SAT Prep on Khan Academy: The College Board has partnered with Khan Academy to provide free, high-quality, interactive practice questions and lessons.
• Khan Academy videos: Videos are available on YouTube covering specific SAT math problem types that students often get wrong.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative program designed to help colleges or universities determine readiness for college-level course work in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Incoming college students in Texas are required to take the TSI Assessment - unless exempt - to determine readiness for college-level work.

Based on performance, students may either be enrolled in a college-level course and/or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve skills and prepare for success in college-level courses.
