CTE Eligibility, Admissions & Selection

Eligibility

BISD offers CTE courses to each and every student. We admit students and make available to them all program advantages, privileges, and courses of study without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, handicap, or age in its programs, services, and/or activities.

Admission

BISD counselors review student course requests to align course scheduling with their interest area(s) in conjunction to state graduation requirements.

Admission to CTE programs of study is based on these criteria:

  1. Student interest

  2. Aptitude as evidenced in successful completion of prerequisite courses

  3. Age/grade level appropriateness
  4. Class space availability
  5. Overall student schedule

Selection

When an overflow of course requests exist for a specific course, a vetting process is followed. Steps to this process include:

  1. Remove students who have not met required prerequisite courses and schedule them in an alternate course requested.
  2. Remove students who are not in the aligned grade level and schedule them in the aligned grade level course for that program of study or an alternate course requested.
  3. Apply a random number generator for remaining qualifying students; remove students as indicated from the random number generator process and schedule them in an alternate course requested. *

*Note: Students removed in step 3 above may be placed on a waiting list to be added to the course if space becomes available.

Transfer students

Counselors meet with students transferring into BISD to align scheduling with previous courses, student interest, and graduation requirements. Transfer students are vetted for overflow courses following the same processes outlined for currently enrolled BISD students.
